A Study on the Condition of the Visually Impaired in Korea

Abstract
Purpose: This research is going to show the necessity of a concern and the data as basis for the research of the visual disabled through condition analysis of the visually impaired as second-class citizen.

Methods: The date were analyzed through Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs document 2011. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 18.0 and p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: Visual impairment of male and female was 149,720 people(58.3%) and 103,429 people(40.3%), and visual field defect impairment was male 2,444people(1.0%) and female 1,248people(0.5%). Visual disabled of male was more than female. Time of occurrence showed antenatal or birth 8,186people(3.2%), before the celebration of a baby¡¯s first birthday 10,452 people(4.1%), and after the celebration of a baby¡¯s first birthday 238,037 people(92.6%). Female disabled registration rate increasement showed twice higher than that of male¡¯s. 3 month average earnings of the visually impaired showed 51.4 ten thousand won.

Conclusions: There is need for blindness prevention and rehabilitation program for recovery of eyesight for the disabled at government level. In addition, we need to have interest about the human rights of the disabled.
